How to do a perineal massage myself, tutorial by our Pelvic health Physio expert in London

Perineal Massage tutorialOur Pelvic health Physiotherapist specialist tells you How to do a perineal massage yourself during pregnancy to avoid tear or episiotomy during childbirth.

You can easily do your perineal massage on yourself by following these easy steps:

  • Start by washing your hands thoroughly and ensuring that your nails are trimmed and smooth in order to avoid any discomfort during the massage.
  • Now you can choose a calm place and a comfortable position. For example, you can sit in a warm bath, lie on your bed or as well get into a birthing position to help mentally prepare for labor. From experience, the last one is pretty efficient mentalize to relax during the delivery.
  • Place a towel underneath if needed.
  • Use a perineal massage oil , an intime gel or a natural, non-irritating vegetable oil like sweet almond oil for example. Avoid coconut oil if you’re prone to yeast infections, as its antimicrobial properties can disrupt your natural balance.
  • Locate your perineum, this is the area that you will find between your vagina and your anus.
  • Once you found the area, begin by gently massaging the sides of your perineum to bring blood flow and warm up the tissue.
  • Once you feel relax and comfortable, you can start to perform the perinal massage by inserting your thumbs about 2 to 4 cm into the vaginal opening aiming toward the back wall in the direction of the rectum.
  • Press gently but firmly downward, then move your thumbs outward toward each side in a slow U-shaped motion. This movement helps you to stretch the lower part of the vaginal wall and the perineal tissue.
  • Now hold the stretch at the bottom for a few seconds, then repeat the sweeping motion.
  • The sensation should feel like a deep stretch. Be aware that tingling or mild burning sensation is normal, but it should, at no time, be painful.
  • Continue for around 5 to 10 minutes, focusing on slow and steady movements. Aim to stay below a discomfort level of two out of ten.
  • Focus some extra time on the areas of your perineum that might be tighter than some other. Repeat gently the movement on the tight areas just you’re you were working out a knot in a back massage.
  • Don’t forget to keep your pelvic floor muscle, your glutes muscle and your whole body relaxed.
  • Understanding your breathing is important, use deep, steady breaths to stay calm and connected with your body as you prepare for birth.

After her assessment, our pelvic health physiotherapist will teach you how to do this perineal massage correctly but she will also give you breathing and breathwork techniques to help you relax during your perineal massage but also during your delivery.
