What is menopause?
Menopause usually happens between the 49 and 52 years old, resulting in hormonal and physical changes. It is defined by the menstrual periods stopping permanently and sometimes the decrease in hormones production of ovaries.
What are the reasons for pelvic floor issues during menopause?
Like muscles in general, menopause and aging can cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken. As these muscles support pelvic organs, having them lose strength can lead to pelvic floor issues. Weight gain during menopause can also be a reason for the loss of pelvic floor muscle function, as well as other age related conditions like asthma, diabetes, or the bladder losing elasticity.
What conditions can results from pelvic floor issues linked to menopause?
Pelvic floor muscles weakening might lead to the following conditions, if not treated on time:
- Leaking when coughing or sneezing
- Urinary incontinence
- Urinary urgencies
- Nocturia: getting up at night to go to the toilet
- Urinary frequency: often need to go to the toilet
- Vaginal and/or abdominal pain
- Sexual dysfunction such as pain or lack of sensation during sexual intercourse
- Anal incontinence
- Difficulty in controlling wind
How can women’s health physiotherapy help treat pelvic floor issues during menopause?
Pelvic physiotherapy will encourage the control of the pelvic floor muscles, with the ability to relax and strengthen them while using a wide range of various techniques: from pelvic floor or deep breathing exercises and biofeedback to hypopressive method. They will as well teach you self exercises to be done on your own in between sessions, in order for your recovery to be fast and effective on a long term basis.
Following an assessment, the physio will determine a personalised treatment to go along with your needs and personal background. They will educate you on the conditions you may have that are linked to the weakening of you pelvic floor muscles, and teach you how to self manage them, alongside manual release and manipulation to fasten the recovery and release the pain if you suffer from any (pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse).
The physio can also give advice on other pathology associated with menopause such as poor bone quality (osteoporosis), hot flushes, vaginal dryness, pain with sex…
Pelvic floor rehabilitation at all stages of your life
Whether you gave birth a few years ago or recently, or haven’t been pregnant at all but are experiencing some pelvic floor issues, it is never too late to start physiotherapy rehabilitation. Pelvic floor exercises can be efficient at any stage of your conditions and your life. As the pelvic floor weakens naturally with age, like all muscles in general, maintaining pelvic exercises throughout every stage of your life will be effective and help prevent any conditions that can be linked to pregnancy, childbirth, aging or other hormonal and physical traumas.
